NWEA Testing

Biome Project

Some people have shown their parents the letter about biome projects, so here it is!

Dear Parents,

Biome projects begin this week! We have learned a little bit about multiple biomes, and we spent all of last week researching about one biome in particular. We will then take that research and compile it into a report. Students will research and write their reports in school; no part of the report needs to be done at home! However, as with the planet reports, there is a homework element. Students will design and create their biome at home. They need to have the following items regarding their tribes represented in their project:

1. Four producers found in the biome
2. Four animals found in the biome
3. Representation of climate
4. Students will also be graded on neatness

Add details! Someone should be able to look at the scenery, plants, animals, and colors in your biome project and know which biome you studied! You may not use plastic on you projects (ex: buying pre-made plastic figurines/objects). You can create your biome in a shoebox or on a flat surface.

Biomes are due Monday, March 21, 2011 for Ms. Felton’s class and Tuesday, March 22, 2011 for Mrs. Anseth’s class. If you finish your project before that, you may bring it in early.

Don't freak out!

Hi everyone,

Today students received their first progress report for 3rd Quarter. Many of you have Fs in Math: Tests and Quizzes. This is because the only grade in that section is a Friday Quiz worth 8 points. If you missed half, you earned 4/8. This is a 50%. However, it would take more than 10 quizzes like this equal even one homework assignment. Your grade is barely affected by this one grade. I realize that seeing an F might freak you out, but it should look very different once today's Ch. 4 Test (worth 100 points) goes in.

Main Idea: Don't freak out about your Test/Quiz grade in math.

Sock Hop Recording Logs

Exciting Week!

Hi everyone,

We have a lot of exciting things happening this week!

First of all the school spelling bee is Thursday, Feb. 10, at 1:15 in the gym. Congratulations to the students from our class who will be competing! Good luck!

It is also a review week in spelling, meaning no spelling homework this week! All review will be done in class.

Our Chapter 4 math test is on Wednesday. You can study long division with 2-digit divisors, dividing money, and estimating at home to help prepare for the test. Study, study, study!

Keep reading to get those pages in! All students are working hard to read 450 pages so they can attend the Sock Hop in March. It is a great time, and I hope our entire class attends.

Students need to bring back their Book Orders by Thursday, Feb. 10. I have opened up close to 30 fliers on the scholastic website, so you have way more options if you use that instead of the fliers we sent home! Our class code is H6FJT. Ordering online is completely safe.

Lastly, don't forget to bring back your permission slip for the Human Growth and Development classes ASAP!

We won the Healthy Habits challenge again!! That's twice in a row! WHOOHOO! We win tangerines for our classroom. New Weekly Math Log

Hello parents,

I wanted to make sure that everyone knows about the new math log that we started last week. Now, attached to the pink Weekly Reading Log is a pink Weekly Math Log. We made flash cards in class, and students are to go through the flashcards for 10 minutes per day in addition to the 20 minutes of reading per day. Students just need to tally how many times they get through the flash cards in the ten-minute period and have a parent/guardian sign the box. Students can work on flash cards with parents, siblings, by themselves, etc.

Some parents didn't know about the Weekly Reading Logs until conferences, so I thought I better spread the word quickly that this is a new part of their daily homework! :)

Redoing Math Test Tomorrow!

Don't forget, tomorrow is picture retake day! Please bring back the originals. Also, please send money if you did not purchase pictures originally. Smile pretty!

Students got their Chapter 2 math tests back today. We went over the entire test, and students were to write down how to solve the problems they missed and staple the work to their original test. Students go earned a D or F on the test are required to do the make-up test (Ch. 2 Test B) on Friday. Anyone else is welcome to do so as well if they would like. Please sign and return the original test by Thursday so I can have the make-up tests ready by Friday morning. Students only need to do the problems they missed on the original test (ex: if they missed 2, 4, and 9 on Test A, they will do 2, 4, and 9 on Test B. Same type of problem; different numbers).

Assembly tomorrow

Hi everyone,

In the hustle and bustle of leaving today, I forgot to send home a note about tomorrow's assembly. It is from Crystal Knutson, our school counselor. I have pasted it below.

Dear Parents,

I would like to share with you a new program that all the students at Eagle Cliffs will be introduced to this year! I call it the “Bucket Fillers” program because it is based on a book called “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” This book explains that every person carries around an invisible bucket that holds all of our good thoughts and feelings about ourselves. A “Bucket Filler” is a person who says or does nice things that make others feel special… and a “Bucket Dipper” is a person who says or does mean things that makes others feel bad. Of course, I want all of our kids at Eagle Cliffs to be Bucket Fillers!

All the elementary schools in School District 2 will have assemblies at their schools called “Rachel’s Challenge.” Rachel Scott was the first victim in the Columbine High School shooting, and she lived a life characterized by kindness and compassion. The presenters at the assembly teach and encourage children to live their lives the same way. The information presented in the assembly does not focus on how Rachel died, but how she lived. (The middle and high schools will also have assemblies, but different information will be presented.)

Eagle Cliffs will be having this assembly on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. I am hoping that the information students hear will add to their excitement and enthusiasm to be BUCKET FILLERS! I will be integrating aspects of the Rachel’s Challenge assembly directly into our Bucket Fillers program, most importantly teaching children to show kindness and compassion!

If you have any questions about the Bucket Fillers program or about the assembly about “Rachel’s Challenge,” please contact me!! I am very excited about the lessons and activities that are planned for this school year to teach and encourage students at Eagle Cliffs to be Bucket Fillers!

Our wing goal is 2,000 points, so don't feel like you have to stop once you have earned your 10 points! Earn as many as you can. I know some of you are capable of earning a lot more!

Hi everyone! Can you believe it is almost winter break? Crazy! The last day of class is Tuesday, December, 22. School resumes Monday, January 4.

We planned on watching the move "American Tall Tales" tomorrow since it is part of the 5th grade reading curriculum, but we were unable to get a copy of it. Instead, we will be watching "Bridge to Terabithia," another 5th grade novel. If you do not wish for your child to watch this movie, please let me know.

Native American Village Projects

Dear Parents,

Native American research and village projects begin this week! We spent all of last week learning about the seven Native American cultural regions in the United States. This week, each student will select a Native American tribe. Students will research and write their reports in school; no part of the report needs to be done at home! However, as with the planet reports, there is a homework element. Students will design and create their tribe’s village and environment at home. They need to have the following items regarding their tribes represented in their project:

1. Dwelling (home)
2. Clothing
3. Wildlife
4. Environment
5. Climate
6. Tools used

Add details! Remember, the Native Americans could not go to the store to purchase their supplies. Students may not use plastic on their projects (ex: buying pre-made plastic figurines/objects).

Villages are due Friday, January 8, 2010. If you finish your project before that, you may bring it in early.

3D Planet Project

Here is a copy of the letter that will go home on Monday, November 16. It explains the 3D paper mache project that students need to complete at home this week. This is a VERY creative class, and I cannot wait to see the projects they bring to school on Friday! :)

Dear Parents,

If your child has not shared with you yet, we are in the midst of planet reports! The students have been working very hard researching their specific planet. This week, we will be typing up our reports in class. Students should NOT need to work on the written report part of this project at home. However, there is a homework aspect of this project. Each student needs to make a 3D paper mache model of their planet at home. Simple instructions for making paper mache projects are provided below. Students may need assistance mixing up the flour/water/salt mixture or reading the directions, but they should be able to complete most of this project by themselves.

Easy Paper Mache - Planet Projects

You will need:

1 cup of flour

Water

Newspaper torn into strips

Balloon / foam ball

Paint / paintbrushes

Add 1 cup of flour to a bowl. Slowly add water until the mixture has the consistency of pancake batter. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and mix.

Blow balloon up to desired size. You can also use a foam ball. Coat newspaper strips in paper mache mixture and gently lay over balloon. Cover the balloon with no more than two layers of the mixture-coated newspaper. Let dry COMPLETELY. (Place extra paper mache mixture in a baggie and refrigerate. You may have to add more water when you use it again.) Repeat with another 2 layers of mixture-coated newspaper and let dry completely. This will ensure that your planet is sturdy enough for you to work with later.

After your planet is completely dry, paint your sphere to look like the planet you have researched. Your science book, the Internet, and books can help you. Add moons and rings if your planet has them. If your planet has more than 10 moons, stop at 10 and explain how many your planet really has in your written report and presentation. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see the planet past all the moons!

The drying part will take the most time, so plan accordingly! The 3D project is due on Friday, November 20.

Don’t forget to be creative and have fun!

Brand New Week!

Hi everyone! I really enjoyed meeting with parents last week, and I hope you enjoyed conferences as well.

Today we looked at the rubric for the big planet report we are starting! Students were excited to see which planet they will soon be experts on. The report will be worked on primarily at school. Students will be required to make a 3D display of their planet, mostly with papier mache, at home. This is not due for a few weeks, and students will receive more information on that part of the project later. This is our first big project, and I am excited to get started!

We worked with divisibility rules and factors today in math. We will continue with that subject on Wednesday to get a better understanding of it. There will be a substitute teacher in the room tomorrow morning- I will be at a math training sessions. Students are expected to be on their best behavior! I know they will be. :)

Spelling words this week are difficult- they're all homophones! Ack! Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently. Students may want to bring home their spelling book this week so they can see example sentences. Here are this week's words:

I told the class today that I told many parents about homework in here, but if it did not come up at conferences, here is how homework works in our class!

Math review sheets go home on Mondays and Wednesdays as homework. Students may not work on it at school. Students who stay with me for the reading block have a spelling assignment on Tuesdays and Thursdays as homework. ALL students are expected to read 20 minutes per night, Monday through Friday, and turn in their cherry-colored Weekly Reading Log every Monday.

Hi everyone! Yesterday was a busy day for Wednesday envelopes. There was a new Healthy Habits sheet, new lunch menu, reminders about picture retakes, progress reports, and conference appointment slips! There was also a reminder that there is no school on the afternoons of the 4th, 5th, and 6th of next week (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday). Phew!

Hello! Another fun Math Club day. Parents, if you want your child to be able to participate in Math Club on Mondays after school from 3:00-3:45, you MUST call me or email me. Math Club is for anyone who wants to be here- we play math games, review what we're doing in class, and have fun!

Stood Up T-shirt permission slips are due Wednesday, along with book order forms! Please get those in ASAP!

Today we learned about decimal patterns in math. What's the rule?? (You move the decimal to the right one time for every zero in the other factor. Ex: 2.714 x 10 = 27.14..... 2.714 x 100 = 271.4...... 2.714 x 1000 = 2714)

We are finishing up Tall Tales in reading and will be moving onto book clubs next week. Hooray!

Students looked over their Chapter 1 test in Social Studies. If they would like, they may fix the problems they missed during lunch recess tomorrow. That 15 minute period is all they have to do so. Many students were thrilled with their tests, so this will not be necessary for everyone. Students then finished the Prereading Handout for Ch. 2 with their new partners.

Hi there everyone!

Don't forget, this week is only 2.5 days long. Wednesday is an early out day, and there is no school on Thursday and Friday! Please make sure you make arrangements with your childcare.

On Friday we sent home permission slips regarding Stand Up T-shirts. Eagle Cliff's PTA is buying a shirt for every student and staff person at the school, so they are FREE! However, we MUST get the slip back to order a T-shirt for your child (or you, if you are a student!). If we have not gotten the permission slip back by Wednesday, you will be responsible for ordering your own shirt if you want one. Annie Anseth, Miss Montana USA (and also Mrs. Anseth's daughter!), is going to be very involved this year regarding our anti-bullying policy. I can't wait to see everyone wearing a shirt! They are awesome!!

Also, book orders are due by Wednesday as well.

We only have a few day of school next week, so prepare to work extra hard! :)

It's Tuesday!

Hey everyone! Happy Tuesday. Today we went over multiplication patterns in math. We discovered that we could multiply BIG numbers by using a few tricks! For example... 300 x 500 = 150,000! 3 x 5 equals 15 (every time) and you add the amount of 0s found in the factors to the product. When multiplying 3 numbers together (Ex: 25 x 6 x 4), it doesn't matter what order we multiply them in. You can start with 25 x 6, or 25 x 4, or 4 x 6! What a great trick! (I personally would start with 25 x 4 since that equals 100... I think in quarters. Then 100 x 6 equals 600!)

In social studies we reviewed for the Chapter 1 Test that is coming up on Friday. We made a list of all of the vocabulary words and concepts we have learned this chapter. No one knows which ones will end up on the test, so it is best to study everything! I was AMAZED at how many students memorized exact definitions of some of our words before we even did the review!

We added punctuation to a poorly-edited paper written by a crayon in a box! :) We made our poster of what kind of person we were. John Henry was a steel-driving man. What kind of boys and girls are we? Book-reading girls? Snowboarding boys? The answers were flying, as was the laughter as poor Ms. Felton tried to illustrate what a "class-teaching woman" or "book-reading girl" looked like. This is due tomorrow!

In writing we worked on something that will be shown at parent-teacher conferences, so I can't spill the beans too much! :) We will work on it more later this week.

Hey everyone! Happy Wednesday! We practiced adding and subtracting decimals today. Everyone did a fantastic job! For homework, students are doing WS 2 to review place value and writing number in standard form from word form.

In science we learned about what the Greeks called the "wandering stars." Students, tell your parents what they were talking about! :)

For spelling, students made word searches using this week's spelling words. We are reading about Davy Crocket and are working on writing "thick" questions. This means questions that are more than just "right there" questions that don't promote higher learning! We are getting really good at writing deep, though-provoking questions.

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today we were lucky to have Mrs. Megerth, one of School District 2's math coaches, come into our classroom for math today. It was quite the fun time! We worked on front-end estimation and rounding.

In social studies we learned about physical features of the US. We are almost finished with Chapter 1! Wow!

We edited our haikus in writing. We are preparting for Poetry Cafe, even though it's not until spring!

For language, students made posters depicting the 4 types of sentences, complete with examples! We worked in our Daybook and learned more about character. Finally, students were able to invent their own characters and described how their character would react to an embarrassing situation!

Homework tonight was Spelling WS 35.

Progress reports go home tomorrow. Parents, you will be able to see your child's grades, along with any missing work they may have. The students can tell you- if it's missing, the computer acts as though it's a zero. This has a major effect on grades. Students, make sure you are getting all of your work turned in!

Hey there everyone! We had a great day today. We are working on adding and subtracting mentally in math. This is something that can be practiced at all times- at the store, in the car, at home, anywhere!

We are also learning about why the stars appear to move. The Earth moves in two ways. Students, tell your parents about each way! Use your science lingo! :)

We finished reading Mike Fink today and made a character frame about him. We got a little crazy playing Sparkle but had a lot of fun!

Parents, remember that school gets out at 12:00 tomorrow. No lunch will be provided. Also, make sure your child has a ride home or to daycare!

I have just realized that the Language homework worksheet involves background knowledge on Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Columbus Day. Students, just complete section A to get the capitalization practice! We will discuss section B tomorrow in class. Sorry for the confusion!

We are working with decimals in math. Today's assignment was page 13, #8-18 evens, 20-24 and 26.

In reading, we discussed Pecos Bill and some of his qualities and exaggerations. Students began reading Stormalong and need to be through page 42.

For spelling, we did the Think and Sort on page 30 and #21-29 on page 31.

Wednesday envelopes went home today, but we did not send home binders. Some students have large instruments to carry, so we left binders at school today. :)

Hi there everyone! Today we finished up with 1.3 (Place Value through ThousandTHS) in math. WS 3 is due tomorrow! In spelling, we worked on using our words in complete sentences. Students are picking 10 of their spelling words and writing complete sentences with them. Capitals at the beginning of sentences and punctuation at the end is worth points!

Proper nouns and common nouns were our language foe! Page 95, #6-20 evens was the assignment. It's due tomorrow morning as well.

In reading, we finished up with Paul Bunyan. We started Pecos Bill and made predictions about why he was famous. We'll read more about him tomorrow and see who was close!

Everyone wrote at least one haiku today about fall. Students, teach your parents what makes haikus different from other poems!

Students need to decide if they are going to be in Band, Orchestra, or General Music by next Monday. We have music on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:00. Students need to start bringing their instruments next Monday, Sept. 14.

If your child leaves for Read 180 or Language, the Reading, Language, and Spelling assignments do not apply to them. There is no other homework for the other subjects today!

We start NWEA testing next week and are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure that your child has a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast! As always, healthy snacks are welcome in the classroom.

Howdy everyone! Happy Thursday!

It was Mrs. Crum's birthday today! We made her birthday cards and sang her our class birthday song, along with Mrs. Alwood's and Mrs. Anseth's classes. It was very fun.

Today we did AMAZING in math!! I was so impressed with how on-task and involved everyone was. We worked hard and it paid off! Hooray! Today's assignment is page 5, #7-11, 13-15, 17-18.

Read 180 and Language started today. Those who remained learned a little about Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts. We will continue learning about him tomorrow. We also talked about sentences v. fragments. Students have WS 1 about this concept due tomorrow. We also have our first spelling test tomorrow! Has everyone studied?

It's Wednesday!

Hello hello! Happy Wednesday afternoon/evening!

Today was a busy day for our class. We started off with Art. The kids made very cool paper sculptures that they brought home today (or will be bringing home tomorrow for those who forgot!). We also had music today and experienced either band or orchestra.

We pressed on with place value in math and were able to use our math journals for the first time! Today's assignment was WS 1. Students, use your math journal to help you out if you need it! Remember, if it's blue, you have to say it together and add the label! :)

Our first science unit this year is on the Solar System. We made a KWL chart about the solar system and read The Magic Schoolbus: Lost in the Solar System! (Oh, Janet! MY teacher is weirder than YOUR teacher!)

We played Sparkle in spelling, and WS 4 is homework.

We finished reading "Three Century Woman" out of our daybooks and wrote four questions, predictions, or connections in our response notes. Parents, ask your children about these very cool books! Students also worked on their Reading Interview. Both of these items need to be turned in tomorrow morning.

Today we sent home Wednesday envelopes. There was a PTA newsletter (our last hard issue! PTA is going green!), a sheet about the Open House (next Tuesday!), and a note that there is no school next Monday, Sept. 7. Binders also went home today. Please look through them with your students to see what they have done so far this year!

First day of September!

Hi everyone! Happy Tuesday! We are almost halfway through our first full week of school. How exciting! This week we are really getting into the curriculum. It's starting to feel like school!

Today we expanded our knowledge on place value through millions. The assignment is Page 5: #9, 13, 17-21, 23-25, 29-33. Students that did not finish at school are to finish it at home and bring it to school tomorrow. Students-- tell your parents about LATE (finger-pointing) or MISSING (*shrug?*) work!

In writing, we wrote 6 Reasons I Shouldn't Have to Write. Some ended up being very funny!

We did the Think and Sort on Page 18 in Spelling. This, along with our writing assignment, is also due tomorrow first thing.

Don't forget the Weekly Reading Calendar is also due tomorrow. Everyone will be getting a new one in their Wednesday envelope. Binders will also be going home tomorrow! Please look over the contents with your child.

What a wonderful first week of school! I can tell already that this is going to be a great year. We have worked on a lot of class-building activities this week and are really getting to know each other. We are lucky to have four new students to Eagle Cliffs in our class, and they fit right in! We are excited to have them with us!

Parents-- If you have not finished filling out the big packet of information (it has a green sheet on top), please do so this weekend. We need to give those to the office as soon as possible. Also, please fill out the orange parent survey about your child and have your child bring it in.

Students-- Don't forget to read, read, read! Then fill out your pink reading log sheet. When is it due? (WEDNESDAY!) When will you get a new one? (WEDNESDAY!) :-)

Again, I am looking forward to the rest of the school year. We have decided as a class that we are going to do everything in our power to make 5th grade the best year ever! I know we can do it!
